Congratulations NSW SES! SafeWork NSW 2021 Award Winner for its Cell on Wheels

Work Science would like to congratulate our client the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) for its outstanding win at the SafeWork NSW Awards last night.

The NSW SES won the large business – government section category for its outstanding Cell on Wheels (CoW Gen2) solution to protect emergency workers during high risk natural disaster deployments. (For a two-minute video summary see here – time ref: 33:00 – 35:00)

The CoW allows all NSW emergency services organisations and supporting agencies to continue communicating with each other using radios even when the power or network is disrupted during disasters. For example, frontline crews could be warned of mission critical information such as changing wind direction during bushfires allowing any agency’s emergency crew to retreat from life threatening situations.

Work Science supported the CoW project through our facilitation of:

  • Asset WHS risk workshops – regular workshop facilitation with stakeholders to identify and control WHS risks throughout the asset lifecycle
  • Conditional remote acceptance inspection – Google Glass inspection at the vehicle integrator’s Melbourne facility that was inaccessible in person due to Covid restrictions
  • Safety file development – coordinating SES, external stakeholders, design consultants to capture essential safety information for the whole asset lifecyle. This included handover and training for SES’ ongoing management. The safety file includes: information validating the identified control measures; details the method and results from risk identification; and evaluation processes applied to the asset

We’re honoured to be part this project demonstrating government agency safety innovation. The NSW SES has pioneered the introduction of new assets that will help keep NSW communities safe during natural disasters. It has done so with a rigorous approach to the health and safety of volunteers who will operate the CoW in its high risk deployments.
